Structurally, the keyboard is made up of several buttons, commonly referred to as keys, and these keys perform a range of unique functions.

What is a Keyboard?

A keyboard is an input device used to interact with computers or other electronic devices. It allows users to input text, numbers, symbols, and commands by pressing keys or buttons. Keyboards can connect to devices via USB, wirelessly, or exist as virtual touch keyboards. 

They are categorized as one of the primary input devices in computing systems. Keyboards come in different layouts and types, such as QWERTY, AZERTY, and ergonomic designs

History of Keyboards

The history of the keyboard can be traced back to the 1860s with the invention of mechanical typewriters. The contemporary layout of keyboards owes its origins to these early typewriters. 

A major advancement in keyboard development was the introduction of the teletype machine, which revolutionized the transmission and reception of telegraphs. 

Early computers, such as ENIAC and BINAC, adopted technology from typewriters and keypunch systems to form the basis of their keyboards.

2. Dvorak Keyboard

The Dvorak keyboard offers an alternative layout to the QWERTY keyboard. While the QWERTY layout can slow down typing due to frequent finger movement, the Dvorak keyboard is structured for faster and more efficient typing. Its design minimizes finger movement, reducing strain and improving typing speed.

Despite its functional advantages, the Dvorak layout did not gain significant popularity, as users found the transition from QWERTY challenging.

Types of Keys on Keyboards

The functionality of a keyboard comes from its keys, each serving different purposes. Common types of keys are:

1. Alphanumeric Keys

These keys are primarily used to enter textual and numeric data. They include letters A to Z and numbers 0 to 9. Special characters such as !, @, #, $, %, and * can also be accessed using specific combinations, typically involving the Shift key.

2. Navigation and Management Keys

Keys such as arrow keys and Page Up/Page Down assist in cursor movement and navigation within documents or interfaces. Editing keys like the Delete key help remove unwanted characters to the right of the cursor. 

Keys like Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock allow users to modify input modes, such as switching between uppercase and lowercase or activating specific functionalities like the numerical keypad.

3. Function Keys

Function keys, labeled F1 to F12, enable shortcuts for various software or application-specific commands. Their role depends on the software in use.

The Shift key allows access to secondary characters on keys or enables uppercase typing. Meanwhile, the Control (Ctrl) and Alt keys can be combined with other keys to perform shortcuts, boosting productivity.
